Court Notice to Delhi University on SC/ST Admission

The High Court of Delhi, on Tuesday has issued a notice to Delhi University on a appeal challenging the allegedly discriminatory policy adopted for admitting students belonging to theScheduled Castes and Schedules Tribes (SC/ST) category.

The Justice G.S Sistani issued a notice to the university and asked it to file a reply by Oct 11. The petition filed by a group of five students and two organizations-Innovative Institute for Development And Education of All and Balmiki Mohalla Sudhar Samiti- alleged that the admission procedure adopted by the university was "highly discriminatory".

They affirmed that theinformation bulletin for SC/ST candidates was improper and of poor quality as compared to the kit for the general category students. The petitioner declared that While a 70-page information bulletin, printed in colour with a personal message from the vice-Chancellor and with information like last year's cut-off marks, information about grievance and placement cell and a city map indicating the college's location, was given to the General Candidates, the SC/ST candidates were given a shoddily printed eight-page bulletin without necessary information".

As per the petition the general category candidates could register using the online from anywhere in India, SC/ST candidates had to come physically to Delhi with all their original certificates to even obtain the registration form". However, making an informed choice at the time of registration was impossible for SC/ST candidates who were not even provided with the required information.

Why is this indifference between students, when the Education System for both categories is the same? Doesn't a SC/ST category student have the Right to Complete Information? Is there any different courses offered separately for General and SC/ST students?

Do you think the education officials should consider the category of a student and then decide on what amount of information should be provided to him/her? Where did the Equality of Right to Information go? Raise now and stop this indifference.
